ThinkOTB Agency

Closing one chapter and starting the next

June 5, 2025

As my placement year at a marketing agency wraps up, I’ve found myself reflecting on just how much has changed in the past twelve months. It’s a strange but fulfilling feeling – equal parts gratitude, growth and anticipation for what’s next.

Of course, all good things must come to an end (for now). At 21, I’m also looking forward to returning to university in Leeds for my final year. I know it’s my last chance to really enjoy student life: spontaneous late nights, minimal responsibilities, and freedom. It’s a moment I want to savour before stepping fully into the working world.

When I first joined the agency, I had no idea how much I’d learn in such a short time. Its been a whirlwind from feeling nervous and overwhelmed when I started to being part of the team and having my own responsibilities. It has given me experience I simply couldn’t get from a textbook. From shaping social media content to supporting campaign planning and sitting in on client meetings, I’ve seen firsthand how ideas turn into real results.

Some of the top things that I have learnt while I have been on placement include:

  • Learning how to use the CMS of the website to add and update web pages. This started off as a real challenge as I had to sue my initiative to trial and error until I got it perfect and ready to launch. This will be a great skill for future employment as am able to optimise the site structure to impact SEO, manage content and create new pages without needing much supervision from management.
  • Developing my blog writing skills. When I started, I had never written a blog, but now, I can draft and upload posts seamlessly. My approach to writing structure in the future has improved and I will be able to carry this forward into my final year at university.
  • Being involved in the set up, planning and execution of several events, including liaising with suppliers about props needed and the design for our stand. this has meant my communication skills have improved massively as I had to sell our services to potential clients.

During my placement, I’ve gained a solid understanding of how a marketing agency operates behind the scenes. I’ve been involved in everything from communicating with clients and drafting briefs to preparing quotes, coordinating with suppliers, and briefing both studio and creative teams. Before starting this role, I had no idea how any of these processes worked – so it’s been a steep but rewarding learning curve. I’ve also quickly adapted to using new software for quoting and purchase orders, which has added another layer to my skillset.

Along with learning how to work in a creative agency I’ve also learnt how to become more innovative and about the agency’s 5 stage Flywheel process.

More than anything, I’ve been lucky to be surrounded by a team that’s been generous with their time, support, and knowledge. They’ve helped me turn theory into practice, and that kind of learning is priceless. This year has given me clarity, confidence, and a clearer vision for the future – and for that, I’ll always be grateful. I’m leaving my placement filled with excitement and an open mind of what’s next to come.
